Rebuild Helps Create the New Urban Garden San Diego — November 13, 2010 — Today at Washington Elementary School in Little Italy, Washington Elementary School Foundation (WESF) announced the groundbreaking of a new school garden, bringing together efforts of community and Washington Foundation members, school parents, and Rebuild's School Garden Network. Rebuild drafted designs and planned community involvement in construction, an effort applauded by school officials and parents. “Washington Elementary is the perfect place for an urban garden,” said Janie Wardlow, principal at Washington Elementary. “Building this garden will bring together our students, parents and community members by providing a project that beautifies the school and teaches us about our food sources and our environment.” The KinderGarden Grows In 2008, the KinderGarden was founded by a group of kindergarten parents and teachers with the goal to plant, harvest and cook with garden grown fruits and vegetables. After the success of the initial harvest, the KinderGarden received funding from several community donors. This year, Washington Elementary was awarded one of two redesign initiatives sponsored by Rebuild. Rebuild’s volunteer architects created designs enabling all students to plant and harvest garden fruits and vegetables. “I’m delighted for our students,” said Julie Morgan, treasurer, WESF. “Rebuild has helped us expand our garden program to allow all our students to experience hands-on, outdoor learning.” Community Support The Washington Elementary garden will encourage community members and organizations to assist with the groundbreaking, 9AM – 2PM Saturday and Sunday, November 13th and 14th. Carpenters, landscapers, and gardeners of all ages and skills will gather to create a vegetable garden and xeriscape. Washington Elementary School Foundation
